The Dying World of Barsoom Needs Heroes: Will You Answer the Call?

First brought to life by Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912,  John Carter is a Confederate officer who survives the American Civil War only to find himself transported to a fantastic version of Mars called Barsoom. The Mars stories spawned a generation of writers who went on to create such classic worlds as Dune, Star Wars, Superman, Avatar and Dungeons & Dragons. It is only fitting that John Carter is brought to life in the industry Burroughs’ ideas helped inspire.  As with many other gamers, the John Carter books inspired a love for Barsoom in Chris Birch, founder of Modiphius, who nurtured a collection of gradually disintegrating novels:

“I remember finding the whole set in a quirky bookstore in Shepherds Bush when I first moved to London, complete with gorgeous 70’s art. The adventures of the Warlord and his friends were hugely inspirational. These classic planetary-romance stories took me on a fantastic journey, and it’s been a dream to see Barsoom come to life through a series of games and miniatures.”

Modiphius is committed to a faithful adaptation of Burroughs’ planetary romance and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter draws directly from Burroughs’ original texts.

John Carter —The Roleplaying Game-- Due for release: Christmas 2015
Explore the wonders of Barsoom from the vast deserts to the ancient cities. Discover the forgotten secrets of a world that was old when life first spawned in the oceans of Earth. Play as pilots, warriors, scientists, or one of the terrifying green Tharks.  Create you own Barsoom adventures or take on the great journeys as John Carter himself along side Dejah Thoris, Kantos Kan, Xodar, Tars Tarkas, Thuvia of Ptarth, Carthoris of Helium or any of the other major heroes and heroines of Barsoom.

The John Carter roleplaying game uses 2d20 LITE—a streamlined version of the 2d20 system featured in the Mutant Chronicles, INFINITY and Conan roleplaying games. Designed for fast flowing action accentuating the exuberant adventures of the original books, 2d20 LITE let’s you dive into the game immediately with a sleek, pulse-pounding system. Major industry artists will help bring Barsoom to life.

John Carter: Swords of Mars—Miniatures-- Due for release: Spring 2016
A line of collectible miniatures for use with the roleplaying game brings your adventures to the battlefield. Play small skirmishes or fight a war for the dying planet—scalable rules provide for both. Defend ruins against a horde of Tharks, raid the city of Helium to capture the Princess or take your battle airborne with the Red Martian navies.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars—The Board Game—Due for release: Summer 2016
Enact the greatest adventures across the ancient world of Barsoom as you lead your heroes through crumbling ruins and take to the skies in the beautiful ships of the Helium Navy. Can you save Barsoom from ruin at the hands of dastardly scientists or ancient forces?

30th Anniversary Return for Post-Apocalyptic RPG - Mutant: Year Zero

10/9/2014

PRE ORDER LAUNCHES TODAY - 10th OCTOBER

Roleplaying At The End of Days
Coming this winter, Mutant: Year Zero is a post-apocalyptic role-playing game, published by Modiphius Entertainment and developed by the Swedish games studio Free League Publishing, under license from Paradox Entertainment. Mutant: Year Zero will be in retail from December 2014 priced £34.99 / $54.99.

The Mutant RPG franchise has a long and rich history in the land of meatballs and snowflakes: Sweden. The first edition was released by Target Games in 1984, at the height of the Cold War and the Golden Age of RPG's in Sweden. There have been several editions in the years since, one of which evolved into the hugely popular Mutant Chronicles franchise in the 1990's - soon also to be released in a new edition byModiphius. The Swedish version of Mutant: Year Zero was released in April of this year to critical success.
Picture
The Ark & The Zone
Mutant: Year Zero goes back to the origins of the Mutant franchise: role-playing after the Apocalypse. In this game, you play as one of The People - heavily mutated humans living in The Ark, a small and isolated settlement in a sea of chaos. The outside world is unknown to you, and so is your origin.

The Ark, your home in the dawnworld. A nest of intrigue and Lord of the Flies-style power struggles, it's far from a safe haven. But it's the only home you know, and just maybe the cradle of a new civilization. The game rules let you improve and develop the Ark in the areas of Warfare, Food Supply, Technology, and Culture. It is up to you, the players, to decide which projects to embark on.

The Zone, wastelands outside the Ark. You will venture into the Zone in search of food, artifacts, other mutants, and knowledge - not least about The People's own origin. The game includes two maps of example Zones; London and New York and a plethora of tables and other tools to let the GM populate its sectors with mutants, deadly monsters and bizarre phenomena.

Where in the world the Zone and the Ark are located is up to you - why not play in a post-apocalyptic version of your own home town? The modular approach of this game lets you place all of the campaign material wherever you like.

Contents
The 256 page full colour hardcover core book contains everything you need for hundreds of hours of play. Some of the contents:
  • A fast and effective character generation system, using archetypal roles such as the Crusher, the Gearhead, the Fixer, the Dog Handler and the Chronicler.
  • Unstoppable but highly unpredictable mutant powers, such as Flame Breather, Insect Wings, Human Magnet, and Pathokinesis.
  • A skill and conflict system that makes you push yourself to the limit, and beyond. The rules system highlights two main themes: mutation and resource management. Every bullet counts!
  • Rules for developing the Ark ("base building") and exploring the Zone ("gridcrawling").
  • A rich story generation system, helping the GM instantly create threats to the Ark as well as locations and events in the Zone.
  • An illustrated bestiary of humanoids, mutated monsters and Zone phenomena.
  •  An extensive collection of artifacts for the characters to find in the Zone.
  • Five complete and ready-to-use "Special Zone Sectors". These are scenario locations with NPC's, backstory and suggested events. These Special Zone Sectors, which each come with an illustrative map, can be placed anywhere in the Zone by the GM.
  • A campaign outline, called "The Path to Eden", including backstory, NPC's, player handouts, and a campaign finale described in detail.

Pre-Order Bonus

Modiphius and Free League Publishing have launched a pre-order for Mutant: Year Zero and those who sign up will also get a bonus double-sided 42x55.8cm map of the New York and London Zones for £34.99 / $54.99. There's also a starter bundle for £49.99 / $79.99 which gets you the core book, poster, dice set and free card set. Find out more about these on the Modiphius website.

Expansions
A series of expansions are already in development. The smaller expansions, called Zone Compendia, will each contain illustrated adventure locations in the Zone, extra mutations, artifacts, rules, and more. The major expansions will each focus on one new playable class: mutated animals, robots, then un-mutated humans. Each major expansion includes a campaign letting you play the origin story of the class, and then introduces the class into the game and into the Zone. We expect to release the first expansion for Mutant: Year Zero in early 2015.

Retail Launch
Mutant: Year Zero will be available in December in retail shortly after the pre-order ships, priced £34.99 / $54.99, Card & Dice sets £14.99 / $23.99 each and will be available through Impressions or Modiphius Entertainment. Further releases are planned from February 2015.

London Tabletop Convention ‘Dragonmeet’ Relaunches for 15th Birthday!

26/5/2014

Modiphius’ Chris Birch and Music Biz Entrepreneur Jonathan Rowlands take over the “UK’s friendliest gaming event”

This year, as Dragonmeet gears up to celebrate its 15th birthday on Saturday 13th December at Kensington Town Hall, a new management team has been announced. Chris Birch, the founder of Modiphius Entertainment and long time music business entrepreneur Jonathan Rowlands have acquired the much loved convention from previous owners Cubicle 7 Entertainment.

“I love Dragonmeet,” said Dominic McDowall, CEO of Cubicle 7, “but making great games is what Cubicle 7 is about. The success of our games, especially our Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings ranges, means that they need to be our focus and we can’t give Dragonmeet the attention it deserves. It’s been a difficult decision – we are all tremendously fond of the show – but it has made it a lot easier to be handing over to such a talented and experienced team. With Chris and Jonathan, Dragonmeet is in very safe hands, and I can’t wait to see what they have planned!”

Together, Chris and Jonathan plan a revamp of the London based tabletop games convention promising ‘more exhibitors, more games, more tournaments and more entertainment’. Expanding in to four new spaces in the Kensington Town Hall, and extending the opening hours till 11pm the team are specifically introducing more boardgames, tournaments, miniature wargames, cosplay and a programme of evening entertainment.

Hotel deals and a lunchtime 'meet up' the next day will help entice those travelling to make a full day of the event, whilst a healthy wargames offering will provide plenty for the miniatures fans.

“I’ve been a visitor to Dragonmeet for years,” said Chris Birch, the founder of Modiphius Entertainment, “and now I’m looking forward to bringing some of our Modiphius magic to the event. London is right in the middle of a huge number of gamers so I’m really excited to build on Dragonmeet’s success and give everyone a world-class games convention in the heart of the Capital.”

Chris Birch has 20 years experience in events, starting a series of youth events aged 16 in his home town of Leamington Spa, working in the music industry running music festivals before launching the Joystick Junkies video game parties and a series of costume balls. Chris launched Modiphius Entertainment in 2013 with the massive Achtung! Cthulhu and Mutant Chronicles Kickstarters and now plans to help Dragonmeet reach a much bigger gaming audience.

Jonathan added, “I came to Dragonmeet last year met Chris and got caught up in the excitement and fun of the whole event” So when the opportunity came to get involved - I was in!"

Jonathan Rowlands has been involved for the last 40 years in music, arts, shows, concerts  and festivals, which along the way has included managing Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, PR for Tom Jones, Nina Simone etc, working with Jeremy Lloyd (Allo Allo, Are You Being Served, Captain Beaky and His Band) and helping set up Dickensworld and Red Redemption (a video game developer with his son Gobion). Jonathan just sold the Bakewell Music Festival after having run it successfully for four years and is now looking forward to being “actively retired” managing the Dragonmeet convention with Chris.

The new Dragonmeet website will launch in June, with early bird tickets on sale until the end of the month. Plenty of announcements will be released over the coming weeks and months so keep an eye on www.dragonmeet.co.uk

For more information contact Chris and Jonathan via our contact page or call 0207 460 1776

The Chronicles of Future Earth RPG Setting Sourcebook

THE DESIGN MECHANISM AND MINDJAMMER PRESS ANNOUNCE “THE CHRONICLES OF FUTURE EARTH” FOR RUNEQUEST 6TH EDITION

“In the last centuries of the Fifth Cycliad, a great malaise began to descend on the lands of humankind. The great civilisations of Earth, which for aeons had seemed on the verge of slumber, now finally began to rot from within. From the edges of the world the ever-present enemies drew close, their hungry claws poised to tear apart the delicate flesh of a fruit a hundred millennia in the harvesting. And all around, a cry arose for heroes, to stand against the dying of the light and save the world from the sins of its past."

"Some said that it was the end of days. Some said that it was only the beginning. These pages tell the history of that time yet to come. These are the Chronicles of Future Earth.”

Mindjammer Press and The Design Mechanism are delighted to announce that The Chronicles of Future Earth science-fantasy roleplaying setting is back, in an all-new full-size hardback edition for the 6th edition of the RuneQuest game.

The Earth we know is gone, forgotten in the depths of time. In its place is a world of mystery and danger, steeped in a thousand centuries of history and legend, where humankind brushes shoulders with beings and creatures strange and monstrous. The Venerable Autocracy of Sakara, the greatest — and oldest — of the Springtide Civilisations, rules over half the world, led by an immortal God-Emperor whose very word is law. It’s a world of deep, dark forests, brooding mountains, timeworn ruins haunted with the ghosts of the past and the weird monsters of the future. Arcane sorcerers explore strange dimensions, terrible priests wield powers from godlike extradimensional intelligences, and mighty soldiers forge new histories from the ruins of the past. It’s a time of danger, reckoning, and adventure. Welcome to The Chronicles of Future Earth.

The Chronicles of Future Earth is a 296-page hardback supplement for the RuneQuest 6th edition game, detailing the cultures, peoples, and creatures of the Venerable Autocracy of Sakara, the oldest of the Springtide Civilisations. With extensive histories, maps, and background, rules for ancient treasures and technologies dug from the depths of the earth, and much more, The Chronicles of Future Earth is the first in a new line of RuneQuest supplements produced by Mindjammer Press, providing everything you need to adventure amid exotic civilisations and the ruins of an ancient past in the unimaginably distant future.

“I’ve been waiting to produce a full-size sourcebook for The Chronicles of Future Earth for several years,” says ENnie Award-winning RPG author Sarah Newton (Mindjammer, Monsters & Magic, Achtung! Cthulhu, Burn Shift, Legends of Anglerre), creator of the Chronicles. “RuneQuest 6th edition represents the cutting edge of the d100 system, and is a perfect ruleset for this new expanded edition. I’m really excited to see what the combined forces of RuneQuest 6 and The Chronicles of Future Earth can produce!”

Lawrence Whitaker, co-owner of The Design Mechanism, said: “We’re delighted that Mindjammer Press chose RuneQuest 6 as the engine for The Chronicles of Future Earth. It’s a wonderful setting and fits perfectly with the RuneQuest ethos. We are very much looking forward to seeing how Sarah and the Mindjammer Press team use the RuneQuest rules for Chronicles and are very happy to be working with them at long last.”

The Chronicles of Future Earth will be published by Mindjammer Press and distributed by Modiphius Entertainment Ltd. Scheduled for release Winter 2014/15.

About Mutant Chronicles

Mutant Chronicles was one of the bigger names in gaming in the 1990's with the Doom Trooper collectible card game translated in to 16 languages, three boardgames, two video games, the massive Warzone miniatures game and the Mutant Chronicles 1st and 2nd Edition roleplaying games with more recently a Hollywood movie, Fantasy Flight Games pre-painted miniature game and last year the reboot of Warzone by Prodos Games. The Mutant Chronicles story took you on this full throttle dieselpunk sci-fi ride through a solar system beset by corporate intrigue and the invasion of a terrible dark alien force. With technology failing due to the insidious effects of the Dark Symmetry humankind must fight back against the Dark Legion hordes whilst dealing with in-fighting and conspiracy from within.

The Solar System is a roaring mayhem of death and war. The surfaces of the inner planets have been swept clean by the violent onslaught of the dark legions storming hordes of Nepharites, Razides, Pretorian Stalkers and Undead Legionaries. In the enormous cities of the far and distant future, heretics devoted to the destruction of humankind stalk the dark backstreets and gloomy alleys spreading their teachings of greed, jealously and war.

In the late 21st century a growing madness of plagues, wars, terrorism and environmental collapse led to the rushed terraforming of the colonies by the major corporations, an exodus from Earth and the final cataclysmic nuclear war. It takes hundreds of years to re-establish life as we know it on the inner worlds of our solar system. Imperial, Capitol, Bauhaus and Mishima now rule from their homes in the steaming jungles of Venus, the caverns of Mercury, the deserts of Mars and the many orbitals and asteroid homes of the solar system. Luna City is a vast neutral sprawl, many hundreds of years old, built up and over the first colony and mines.
Picture
A fateful exploratory mission to Pluto unleashes an ancient evil force 'The Dark Symmetry' upon the thinking machines of man. As technology fails (and even fights back), mankind is beset with conspiracy and corporate intrigue from within. Dark things gather on the edges of the colonies and whilst corporate war consumes the greatest armies of man, the Dark Legion’s citadels rise up throughout the worlds of the solar system and terrifying armies march out to consume all. They were defeated long ago, they will not be defeated this time. As the Dark Symmetry's malign influence on humanity grows, the Brotherhood with their strange powers, arise to unite the corporate armies as one and fight back.

Modiphius filled in the gaps in the original storyline, expanded the backstory and plotted secret events that will carry your adventures through a 1000 years of future history. Now players can adventure during the early days of the Dark Symmetry with investigations of foul cults and technology turning on mankind, through to the brutal Corporate Wars and then fight the Dark Legion as they pour forth from their citadels across the colonies. The Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition RPG system is a full rewrite playtested by over 400 groups in the last the last 6 months and has been designed for cinematic adventure - whether you want investigative, discovery or action orientated games

SPARTAN SUMMONS THE POWER OF ACHTUNG! CTHULHU

Spartan Games and Modiphius Entertainment announce Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish Game for 2014

Picture
Spartan Game’s Neil Fawcett and Modiphius’ Chris Birch recently met over a slap-up fish & chips supper and a pint of Somerset cider and discovered they had a few things in common. Talking about cool miniatures and game projects ‘til the cows literally came home to the farm next door, the two soon realised that they had to turn at least some of those crazy ideas into a reality.

So, the first project out of this rather dangerous meeting of minds is the Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish Game, to be launched in Spring 2014. Building on the massive range of Cthulhu creatures, Allied Investigators and Nazi Villains funded by the Achtung! Cthulhu Kickstarter, Spartan Games will launch a full-blown skirmish game line under license from Modiphius Entertainment.

The Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish Game will utilise the fast-paced, action-packed rules used in Spartan’s Dystopian Legions game, and plans for the range include starter sets, faction sets, hero sets, large creature sets and experimental vehicles, as well as a full-colour stand alone rulebook.

“We [Spartan Games] have chewed over the idea of a WWII game for a couple of years now, but never had the all-important time to devote to creating the world. Then along came Chris and his enthusiasm, coupled with a fabulous game setting and some lovely miniatures. It didn’t take long to figure out what we could do together. I’m very excited by our plans for 2014,” explains Spartan Games Creative Director Neil Fawcett.

The first range of 49 miniatures, sculpted by Russ Charles, will be extended to include more Mythos creatures, Nazi Villains, Allied Heroes and strange experimental vehicles. Spartan plan to utilise their hugely popular laser-cut scenery line to add some stunning battlefield scenic accessories so that players can bring to life some of the stranger aspects of the Achtung! Cthulhu world, whilst Spartan’s high quality resins will allow some truly larger-than-life Cthulhu creatures and war machines to dominate the battlefield.

Modiphius Entertainment and Pinnacle Entertainment Group announce the official Achtung! Cthulhu: Showdown!™ skirmish game in 2014.

Launching in Spring 2014 alongside the awesome range of Achtung! Cthulhu miniatures, Achtung! Cthulhu Showdown!™ is a standalone miniatures rulebook and full campaign allowing skirmish players to dive in to the world of Achtung! Cthulhu.

“We’ve been dying to see one of our Savage Worlds licensees do a big, full-blown Showdown miniatures game for some time. Modiphius has truly impressed us with Achtung! Cthulhu, and when we saw the incredible miniatures and terrain for the game Mark Margraf created for it at GenCon 2013, we knew this was something truly special. We can’t wait to get some lead painted and play it ourselves!” Commented Shane Hensley of Pinnacle Entertainment.

Showdown!™, is the official miniatures rules for the award-winning Savage Worlds rules system. This release will include all the rules you need to play plus quick rules for sanity loss on the battlefield, details of the Mythos creatures and forces of the Secret War, typical World War Two troop lists for the Western Front, standard scenarios, and a full blown campaign following the adventures of Charlie Company in the Forest of Fear.

“There’s a whole skirmish story arc for people to play out, from their first days in the squad to leading a whole company against the forces of the Third Reich and the Mythos,” Chris Birch of Modiphius explained. “The great thing about Showdown!™ is that it lets you take the essence of the Savage Worlds roleplaying game, turn the action up to 11 and pump hot lead into the face of tentacled evil!”

Modiphius Entertainment will be releasing Achtung! Cthulhu: Showdown!™ (written by Dave Blewer and Mark Margraf) as part of their ever-expanding Achtung! Cthulhu line in the Spring of 2014, supported by sets of Secret War Unit & Event Cards, giving players all the possible units they could need in an easy to use playing card format alongside further campaigns and supplements opening up other well-known fronts.

British publisher Modiphius Entertainment has announced a licensing deal with Paolo Parente’s DUST Studio to create a tabletop roleplaying game set in the DUST universe.

Scheduled for Spring-Summer 2014, DUST Adventures will consist of a core rulebook and setting guide and will be followed by supplements and campaigns. The books will feature both new artwork as well as stunning photography of DUST miniatures.

The campaigns will also feature DUST Tactics and DUST Warfare missions allowing fans of the miniatures games and roleplayers alike to enjoy the DUST universe in new ways. The system being written for DUST Adventures draws heavily on the elegant systems of DUST Tactics, uses the same familiar dice, and aims to easily bring characters from DUST Tactics in to the roleplaying game or roleplaying characters in to your DUST Tactics or Warfare games.

Campaigns will explore the background behind the major events in the DUST universe as well as presenting new storylines for players. Allowing players to create heroes from the Allies, the SSU, or independent factions, the game system is designed for both first time roleplayers as well as offering advanced rules for experienced players.

MODIPHIUS recently launched the Achtung! Cthulhu game line via Kickstarter and is producing a cross-over book called Achtung! Cthulhu: Secrets of the Dust, which lets players mix characters from both universes in a terrifying mission beyond their worlds. This book will be compatible with the DUST Adventures roleplaying game, DUST Tactics and DUST Warfare.
